Olive

Olive is very interesting. It is a pretty vast town without and actual town center. Much of Olive was relocated in the early 1900’s when the reservoir was created and the NYC DEP owns quite a bit of the land in the area in order to preserve the quality of the NYC reservoir water. This ownership results in a lower property tax which is attractive to many second home buyers and compensates for the extra travel distance to Woodstock and other towns. Olive comprises three different areas, Shokan, West Shokan and Olive. Shokan is to the north of the reservoir and has route 28 along it and most of the homes available in Shokan are in subdivision type setting except for homes off of the more rural roads which tend to have a view to the mountain behind and sometimes over the reservoir. Shokan has a shopping area in the town of Boiceville which includes Bread Alone Bakery and an IGA supermarket. Boiceville is also where the local Onteora High School, Middle School and Bennett Elementary are located. West Shokan is on the other side of the reservoir off of Route 28A and is much more rural and has many wonderful walking and hiking trails. West Shokan is where the town offices are located as well as the town pool and library. South of West Shokan is Olivebridge which is also very rural and somewhat isolated but is loved by many weekenders and full timers for this exact reason. It is quite and beautiful and sometimes overlooked.
